Mariner 4: Launched November 28, 1964. After 228 days and 523 million miles of travel, Mariner 4 passed Mars at a distance of 9844 km. Mars is the first planetary surface which was imaged; Mariner 4 returned 21 images covering only 1% of the surface. These photographs showed craters and dry conditions quite unlike the surface of the Earth.
